The authors themselves admit that preexisting brain differences can explain the pattern. On top of this, the they did not qualify the change in brain composition as harmful. Parts of your brain will grow or shrink depending on what you do with your life, you can induce change by lifting weights, and driving trucks or even lecturing at a university. This is just experience dependant plasticity. Forget about gray matter, ever the entire brain is shrinking ever since the agricultural revolution (DeSilva, J. M., et al. 2021) yet IQ has only increased (Flynn Effect). Loss of gray matter is not necessarily harmful till someone writes a peer reviewed paper stating otherwise.
